Cheryl is a Richmond native, a former district administrator, and a former student who attended district schools in San Pablo and El Cerrito. She is the first African American woman to hold the permanent role of superintendent.
Cheryl previously served as the deputy superintendent of public instruction at the California Department of Education, overseeing the instruction, measurement and administration branch. She has also served as the California Department of Education’s deputy superintendent of human resources and labor relations.
